5 Brexit changes

Overview

Brexit came into force from 1 January 2021. In this note we remind you of five big Brexit changes.

1. Deadline for settled and pre-settled status has passed

If you are an EU citizen, but you have already got the ‘Indefinite leave to remain’ or the ‘Indefinite leave to enter’, you have the right to continue to live, work and study in the United Kingdom after Brexit. Otherwise, you needed to get Settled or Pre-settled status by 30 June 2021. This deadline has now passed. So if you don’t have any of these you need a VISA.

2. European travel rules

From January 2021 UK nationals that want to visit Schengen area countries for more that 90 days (in any 180-day period), must have a visa. There are other significant changes to the travel rules, such as:

  • No more free mobile roaming in European countries
  • If you want to travel with your pet you need an animal health certificate
  • No more European passport lanes at UK airports
  • Limits on duty-free shopping from EU

3. New immigration system

When Brexit came into force, the immigration system was changed. You can read about some of the changes here.

4. Customs, Import & Export, Online Marketplace

The UK and the EU have agreed that in most cases there won’t be any customs duties on imports and exports. However, customs declarations and various other bureaucratic hurdles can make imports and exports difficult. Another change is that from 1 July European country Distance Selling Thresholds was withdrawn and replaced with a single intra-community sales threshold of €10k. If intra-community sales exceed this, the selling business needs to enrol in a special scheme within its home country. Learn more here. Another change in VAT was that until the 30 June there was no EU import VAT on  B2C consignments with a value of less than €22. From July, this exemption stopped. However, rather than pay VAT at the border for each shipment they can account for and pay VAT via the Import One Stop Shop. Finally, from 1st July 2021 the Online Marketplace reforms came into force. 5. Erasmus+

The Erasmus+ is an education programme, that allows university students to study in other European countries for 6-12 months during their course. GB announced that after Brexit it would no longer participate in the Erasmus+ programme, but they will establish an own overseas scheme named Alan Turing.
